"What is Organic Food?" Definition and Differences Show The Advantages and Benefits of Organic Foods
The best way to explain, "What is organic food?" is to give a definition, provide information or organic food facts and then demonstrate the differences between organic farming and food grown or raised with conventional farming practices.
Organic food is food that has been grown, raised and/or produced according to
organic food standards.
"Organic" is a legal term. Meaning that the use of the term is regulated by legislation and its use is limited to those foods that have met the criteria of organic standards.
I can remember the farm we lived on when I was young. The vegetable garden was massive. My parents had to feed 4 kids. But, we also did canning and freezing so we were set for winter too.
Back then, you didn't hear about such things as "organic food." You just took care in what you put on your garden because you were planning on eating the food. We learned which crops grew better together and then went with that. We saved our best to have seeds for next year and that way we improved our crop from year to year.
You knew that your soil needed nutrients to be able to support and grow healthy plants. So you composted and put nutrients back into the soil. It just made sense to use sustainable, eco-friendly farming methods. And you could see the results for yourself quick enough, in your fruits and vegetables-healthy and nutrient rich.
This is traditional farming and it is organic farming today. The foods grown on organic farms can be called organic food.
Things are different now. Not all farms use traditional farming practices. Small farms have been bought by big business. What does big business do?
Make money, turn a profit; which is not necessarily a bad thing in itself. But, when we look at how they went about producing this end, we see the differences in non-organic and organic foods. It is these differences that form the foundation of the advantages and benefits of organic food.
Conventional farming has put more science into food production with the aim of reducing costs and increasing yields and profits.
This could have been a good thing, science has a lot to offer and who doesn't want to make a profit? Problem is that it just didn't turn out to be such a good thing to put profits ahead of all else including health, quality and what is organic food.
The table below shows the main differences between organic food and non organic or the conventionally grown and produced foods.

Genetic alteration of DNA material from other species is used in GM crops to produce a desired characteristic. Labelling of such foods is voluntary. This means that with over 90% of the US soybean crop being GM, you had better assume you are eating
genetically modified food
if it contains soybeans.
Irradiation
is a process of
food preservation.
What occurs is that the food undergoes radiation to kill off living organisms. Good bye to live raw food with this method of preservation.
I also want to clarify that organic farms do use fertilizers and pesticides. The difference is that they do not use
synthetic chemical pesticides
which damage our environment. Case in point is
Atrazine.
A herbicide capable of turning male frogs into female frogs, according to a recent study. The change in the sexual characteristics and behaviour happened with just a minimum of contamination to their water.
"What is organic food?" can now be answered by saying that it is food that is produced in a eco-friendly manner so as to sustain the environment and the nutrient benefit of the foods.
