12 Tips For Safe Food Preparation

Some thought and effort is needed in safe food preparation to make sure that you are not lowering the value of the food yourself during preparation. Contaminants can from outside of the home and be carried in or small errors in food prep is another source.

12 Tips For Safe Food Prep

1. Before beginning food preparation, wash your hands with soap and water.

2. Use a clean knife and cutting board to cut vegetables.

3. Use a second clean knife and second clean cutting board to cut meat.

4. Wash you hands with soap and water after handling meat.

5. Wash your vegetables to remove any outside contaminants. Even organic vegetables can be contaminated by pesticides during shipping.

6. Never cook or heat foods in the microwave using plastic containers.

7. Thaw meats in the fridge. This takes longer, but is a safety point. Meat defrosts from the outside inward.

8. Refrigerate all leftovers within one half hour.

9. You do not need to wait until food cools to refrigerate. Modern fridges can handle the cooling.

10. Keep foods either hot or cold. If your husband is late, refrigerate the food and then reheat it instead of leaving it out for him.

11. While cooking, turn all pot handles inward so they won't get knocked. Particularly important with children running about.

12. Always check the interior of the oven to be sure it is empty before turning it on.

Safety in food preparation is necessary to be applied to all food handling. Using organic food provides its own benefits and yet safety still is needed.
