Prenatal Nutrition and Healthy Eating
Prenatal nutrition is an important factor in both your health and your baby's.
But, did you know that the better you do, the better your baby does?
Your doctor has probably discussed with you the importance of your diet during pregnancy. (If you haven't seen a doctor yet, make an appointment now. I'll be here when you get back.)
I'm sure that you are planning changes. So, let me help you out.
You may not always feel like eating. And sometimes you think you could eat a horse (a reference to being very hungry).
To get the most out of the food you do get down, I suggest eating healthy by eating organic food.
Let me tell you why...
The production methods used are more traditional farming practices. Composting, instead of chemical fertilizers are used.
Natural pesticides over dangerous chemicals are employed.
As a result the plants are healthier. Healthy plants are what you want to eat because of their high nutrient content. So not only are you not getting all the chemicals, you are also getting better nutrition. Another thing that you need to do to eat healthy is avoid
processed foods.
Processed foods contain ingredients that are harmful. MSG, aspartame, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats should be avoided by all of us. But, for the expecting mother this is more so. When you do not consume these ingredients, not only will you feel better, but your baby will get only nutrients. Chemicals added to food do not enhance their value. Let me expand on this point... Nutrients are vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Each of these enhance the body's function. They work together to ensure all systems are operating. On the other hand, chemicals do not enhance the body's function. They instead act to change the body's function. They introduce foreign substances that the body has to deal with, at best. At worst, they deprive the body of it's ability to absorb real nutrients. An example of depriving the body of nutrients are the hydrogenated fats. These man-made fats contain no nutrients. That makes the first flaw. The second flaw is that they inhibit the body's ability to absorb nutrients from other foods. I understand that you may not be in a position to buy organic for all your foods. But there are things you can do to improve prenatal nutrition. Steps to Improve Prenatal Nutrition - Avoid processed foods.
- Ensure you are getting enough protein in your diet. Buy your meats raised "chemical free" and "hormone free". These producers may not have the "organic" title, but they don't use chemicals or hormones. Just ask, you may find a local producer right in your neighborhood.
-
Avoid consuming ordinary milk.
Drink organic milk. (It tastes a lot better too.)
- When eating out, request that no msg be used in the preparation of your meal.
- Buy your iceberg lettuce and spinach organic. The FDA now permits irradiation of these two products in conventionally grown produce.
- Avoid soy products, if you don't use organic. Most of the earth's soybean crop is now genetically altered. This process has created new proteins in the food that we have not seen before. Basically, they are new foods. You don't need to be exposed to this potential danger.
This is a very exciting time. Anticipation of the new delivery. Work with your doctor to ensure you are meeting your prenatal nutrition needs.
