Have We Glorified Organic Nutrition?
Is there any difference in organic nutrition than conventional foods? I mean isn't the nutrient value of produce the same i.e. a carrot is a carrot however it is grown? Statistically, more people are buying organic food than ever before. Large retailers are moving to make this an option. And large corporate manufacturers want in on the market too. An example of this is Kraft. So, is there something to this trend? Well, let's find out... Produce has it's basic nutrients in perfect balance for ease of absorption. And each fruit or vegetable has it's own unique blend of nutritional content. This is true. Yet, the healthiest of plants would also have more nutrients than any less healthy plant.
SIDEBAR Consider for a moment your vegetables in your fridge. Those purchased this week are still crisp and fresh. Any vegetables that you have had in the fridge for weeks have lost their crispness and consequently, also some of their nutrients. This example shows that even though a carrot or a stick of celery may have inherently the same nutrients, factors can affect the amount of nutrients. In this case, age of the produce affected the change.
What makes organic stand stellar is the production methods that are used. Here we have the farmers working in unison with the land to maintain a high quality of soil. These farmers recognize that the soil is alive. This is a key point in farming produce of high nutrient value. You see, nutrient rich soil produces healthy nutrient rich plants. And did you know that healthy plants are more able to resist disease and pests? So, they also would not need heavy chemicals to grow. The organic farmer does not use synthetic chemical pesticides or fertilizers; avoiding the
dangers of pesticides
And the animals from an organic farm are fed organic food. These animals don't get contaminated with chemicals or
hormones.
If the animals aren't contaminated, then neither is the meat from the animals contaminated. Nourishment through organic nutrition provides you high value nutrients with the added bonus of having less chemical contaminants. It is good practice to still wash the produce to clean off any residue from transport.
