Let's start with the first question. Are you going to have a plot in your yard or are you going to start with a few plants in pots?

Well, if you have never planted a garden the easiest way to start organic gardening for beginner is with a few plants in containers or pots. Container gardening (opens new window) allows you to get some experience and confidence.

If you want to plant the garden outside, you'll need to have a vegetable garden plan. To help you with this step, I recommend home-vegetablegarden.com. Phil will walk you through the planning and layout of your garden.

Ok, so what are the easiest plants for a beginner to start with?

Tomatoes are easier to grow. And they will grow nicely in pots. You could also go with a few herbs like parsley, chives or even oregano. These herbs go very well in many recipes. So you'll also be able to expand on your cooking adventures.

When is the best time to plant for where you live?

In most cases, spring is the best time to plant outdoors. After the risk of frost has ended. But, if you choose to start with pots, you can just go ahead and start.

Will you start from seeds or small plants (seedlings)?

I have experienced failures when planting from seeds. It is disappointing when you fail. So I have to recommend that the organic gardener for beginner starts with small plants. The seedlings can come from a local grower. For herbs, you can quite possibly get your starting plant from a friend or relative.

When planting in pots use potting soil. Using the soil in your yard would just tend to clump and become hard like clay. You can find good potting soil in most gardening stores.

To your success!
