Natural Beef: Avoid Chemicals And Save Money

Natural beef is becoming more and more available. Since the natural food industry is not regulated like organic food standards, the term is used loosely in labeling and what is required.

Labeling requirements do specify that the label must also state why it is natural.

It started with beef having no hormones, a prevention for early puberty and no antibiotics.

Cattle grazing

However, to meet consumers wishes, many producers are aiming to give them what they want.

So...

An increased importance is being placed on

  • humane treatment of the animals
  • grass fed and vegetable fed (this eliminates BSE exposure from meat byproducts)
  • enhanced nutrition for the animal resulting in higher nutrient content
  • environmentally friendly methods used in production (no chemical pesticides).
These products do provide a higher quality over conventionally raised animals for these reasons.

In choosing a producer you need to ask certain questions.

Questions To Ask Beef Producer Or Supplier
  1. What is it that makes this natural?
Is the animal just grazing on a conventional farm? Here you what to find out exactly why the producer is calling this natural beef.

  2. What is the animal fed?
The animal should be grazing on non pesticide fields weather permitting. These animals have been found to have up to 500% more CLA in their tissues and milk than those fed feed.

  3. Are pesticides used on the grazing fields?

  4. What is the animal fed in the winter?

Now, ideally the answer to the first question tells you enough to know the animal is pesticide and drug free.

Find a farmer or supplier with a favorable reputation. One that you trust. Go to your local farmer's market to search out the area producers. Not all producers use chemicals. But, some of them do not promote it. It is just natural to them to carry on the traditions of the old family farm.

I found a producer at my local market that uses no chemicals. I only found this out, because I asked questions. I told him how people want the no hormone, no medication, no pesticide beef and that if he let people know--they would come.

Well, what happened. He put up a big sign promoting his meat. The line up formed at his booth and the local paper wrote up a story about his natural beef.

It is possible that you could find a Certified Naturally Grown producer. These farmers make their paperwork of certification available to the public on the website. Now, that is something you will not find with organics.

So, even though there is no government regulatory body overseeing production of natural meat, you can find farmers willing to supply what you want. This option also is cheaper than the organic beef. And why not? The farmer doesn't have to pay the same regulatory fees and expenses.
