Hydrogenated Oils Cause Overeating
Hydrogenated oils are not natural. These oils are a man-made creation. Here is a process to keep the oils from going rancid before you even buy them. These oils are created by forcing a hydrogen molecule into the oil. Not that it goes in very easily. We are talking between 248 and 410 degrees for this chemical process. Oils are unsaturated fats. This process changes the unsaturated fats into saturated fats and trans fat. The oils are turned from a liquid in their natural state to solids or semi solids; producing a sludge like mess no one would want to eat. With processing and coloring this resulting solid becomes margarine or shortening for baking. Although the fat is now saturated, the quality can't hold a candle to what Mother Nature gives us in animal fats. Foods with partially hydrogenated oils are no better. The difference is only that the process is stopped before a solid results. Let's clear something up about fat. Fat has become the enemy in our diets. The truth is that your body needs the essential fatty acids that come from fat. The essential fatty acids are needed for normal body function. They are used at the cellular level in metabolism. They are used in the gastrointestinal tract for nutrient absorption. And they are used as well in the nervous system. Without these oils, the body doesn't function at its optimum. The body's demand for the nutrients of the essential fatty acids can't be ignored. When your diet lacks essential fatty acids, you end up overeating as an effort to obtain the nutrients. However, hydrogenated oils fail to provide what is needed. The heavy processing has destroyed all essential fatty acids. The result is nutrient starved fat bodies. To add insult to injury: hydrogenated oils not only lack nutrients, they also inhibit the absorption of nutrients from other sources. Longterm effects are seen in your body's health from the actual damage caused to healthy blood vessels to the damage caused by deficiency diseases. When I say longterm effects, you need to understand that the effects may take years to appear. Witness the steady rise in heart disease for the last 30 years. Add to that a rise in obesity and diabetes and you can see how this poison is effecting us.
What You Can Do
- Avoid packaged foods with this ingredient.
- Cook with unprocessed oil. I have used cold-pressed Olive oil for 20 years, at low heat it is fine. For higher heat cooking, I use cold-pressed organic safflower oil.
- When eating out, avoid ordering foods that would be prepared with oils like salad dressing, fried foods, breads and cakes.
- Eat whole natural or organic foods.
- Avoid mono-dyglycerides, an alternative name on packaging.
- Use butter instead of margarine. I have resisted ever going to margarine as a staple due to its industrial roots.
- Avoid breads made with shortening. Shortening is a hydrogenated fat.
