Green Cleaning Tips

Some of these green cleaning tips I have found because of necessity. Having an intolerance to chemical cleaners since my teen years, I had to come up with other ways to still get the cleaning done.

1. Wash your laundry with dye-free, phosphate free, fragrance free laundry soap. Neither the dyes nor the phosphate make your clothes any cleaner. But, both dyes and phosphates are harmful to the environment and clean clothes do not stink, so the fragrance is not needed either.

2. Use a mixture of vinegar and water to get your windows and glass surfaces gleaming clean.

3. Clean windows with old newspapers. This works better than paper towels for a streak free shine.

4. Use a washable rag to wipe up spills. No need for paper towels.

5. Empty a can of coke into the toilet bowl to clean off stains. Let sit a few minutes, then scrub surface as usual and flush.

6. Disinfect surfaces by using hydrogen peroxide and then vinegar. Here is what to do: Buy two squirt bottles (available in "dollar stores"). Put 3% Hydrogen Peroxide in one bottle and vinegar in the other. The vinegar can be the ordinary white vinegar or you could use apple cider vinegar. Lightly spray surfaces in your kitchen or bath with one bottle and then the second bottle. The order of spraying is not significant. This is more effective than most purchased chemical disinfectants.

7. Using the same two bottles of your peroxide and the vinegar you can spray in turn your fruits and vegetables. Then hold under running water to rinse off. If a little residue remains, not to worry, it won't harm you. This action will kill off Salmonella and E. coli that may have gotten on the produce.

8. Run vinegar through the coffee maker to clean off the build-up. Then be sure to run water through 2 to 3 times to get out all the vinegar taste.

9. To get grease out of clothes, run through washer with a can of coke. The coke will dissolve the grease. Then wash as usual.

10. Use phosphate and dye-free dish soap. Your dishes will be cleaner without the chemical residues.
