Food Labeling: The Crimes We Commit Against Our Bodies

Food labeling is required on all packaged food. But do you really know what you should be avoiding? How would organics be any better?

What is surprising is the incredible number of food additives that are permitted in your food. It is in the thousands, the number of non-food chemicals in your food. Food preservatives are there so the food won't go moldy or rancid before you buy it.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a cheap highly processed sweetener. It can be linked to obesity and diabetes. Avoid this ingredient.

Food irradiation of ingredients is when the ingredient has been subjected to radiation to preserve them or to keep pests out. Spices and potatoes are common victims to this method of preservation.

To sound less scary to the consumer, you might find the alternate "cold pasteurization". This is a misnomer; pasteurization is not the method used. Let me ask you this...

Do you really want to eat something that even the bugs won't have anything to do with?

Then there are the new foods. The genetically modified food or organism has had their genetic make-up altered. Scientists in a lab have manipulated the DNA to favor a characteristic. The most common characteristic they are going for is "herbicide resistant". This does nothing to improve Mother Nature's work. Avoid these.

Neurological disease is linked to the man-made chemical sweetener, Aspartame. To many scientists it has long since proven itself to be a deadly poison. Refuse products with this additive. A favorable alternative sweetener for your morning coffee is stevia.

Hydrogenated oils or fats are hazardous to your health. They are known to cause blood vessel damage leading to heart disease. They also will make you fat and cause low absorption of nutrients. Avoid even those products with trans fat removed.

You will see foods labeled natural or all natural. Here you must read to find out why it is natural. Is the whole product natural or just one ingredient. For example you could have potato chips made with hydrogenated oil and topped with natural cheese. In this example you would still avoid the product.

Fortified
and enriched are seen on processed food. Processing destroys nutrients. There is now a fad to fortify most everything, even water.

Avoid these foods. The nutrients used are synthetic man made copies of natural essentials.

Use the information on food labeling to select high quality foods and avoid any further crimes against your body.
