Eating A Healthy Breakfast Curbs Over Eating
My mother always said you need to be eating a healthy breakfast.
But why?
You probably have eaten super by 6:00 p.m. the night before. And maybe you had a snack at about 8:00 p.m. So by the time you get up and are ready to go to work, you have been fasting for 10 to 12 hours.
Both your body and mind would be sluggish and ready for the energy that food provides. Without this energy and nutrients, your mental alertness would be lacking. And for children, their ability to learn, sit still and pay attention would be tempered.
Eating breakfast is also a good way to prevent over-eating the rest of the day. By preventing that absolute and total famished feeling, your body never has to act as though it is starving.
Alright. So, what is a healthy breakfast?
Eating a healthy breakfast would include getting protein. This is important for brain power and also it is a source of energy.
You need carbohydrates. But these should be high quality carbohydrates, often called complex carbohydrates because they are made up of more parts and take longer to digest.
A favorite breakfast of mine is two semi-hard boiled eggs mixed with 1/4 cup cottage cheese and a piece of buttered rye bread. With this, I am getting the protein in the eggs and cottage cheese. I am also getting whole grains, fiber and complex carbohydrates in the rye bread. Cottage cheese is high in protein, having 16 gms per serving.
Cereal is a popular breakfast food. Unfortunately boxed cereal can be made from
ge food-the new foods;
be high in sugar content and loaded with synthetic nutrients. If you choose cereal, buy organic using whole grains. Avoid those made largely of soy as a source of protein.
SIDEBAR Our society has come to believe that soy is healthy and as a result many foods use it. Soybeans have fallen victim to genetic engineering.
Although organic products would not have genetically modified soy, soy should still be limited. It breaks down chemically much the same way as estrogen. As a result it can bind at receptor sites in place of estrogen--causing hormone imbalances.Even societies that use soy, like Japan-do not use this protein in place of other sources of protein.
An excellent breakfast is hot cereal. Oatmeal is another one of my favorites. I use a little maple syrup for sweetening. Or how about apple and cinnamon cream of rice? Now, to complete a hot cereal breakfast, ideally a source of protein would be included. A simple egg served on the side would do it.You will find that by eating a healthy breakfast you have more energy physically and mentally. You will also notice that by eating a healthy breakfast that you have more energy in the afternoon, after lunch. This probably is because your lunch can be used to fuel your afternoon and not be desperately needed to feed a starving body.
