I am sure that you have heard about the contaminated ingredients that were sold to unknowing dog food makers. The result was hundreds of dogs and cats across North America getting sick or dying. This was a tragedy. But, it is not what this article is about. No. The dangers I am referring to still exist today. Just as humans have been experiencing an increase in illness and disease, so have our pets. Why is this? Over the last 20 to 30 years a dog culture has evolved. Care, pampering and feeding of pets has become a billion dollar industry. Mass production of dog food is the norm. The ingredients used to make dog food include artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. The artificial colors and flavors are to keep the costs down. When you use real beef to make a stew, do you need to artificially color or flavor the stew? Of course not. The preservatives have no purpose but to increase the shelf life of the product. This keeps the costs down for manufacturers. Which then translates into higher profits. Preservatives are toxic to your dog. The pets suffer skin diseases, kidney failure, fur loss and a loss of zest of life. The damage done can be from allergies to premature death. How long should a dog live? Well that varies with breed. But when you see many your friend's family pets succumbing at a young age, you have to question what is going on. To welcome a dog into the family and loose that family member just a few short years later is crushing. My Aunte just recently lost her family pet to a heart attack at the young age of 9 years old. And I just found out that the dog's sister is now dieing of cancer. But how can the preservatives and other artificial ingredients cause so much harm? From food, you get the nutrients you need to survive. And this is the same with your pet. You must consider the size of dogs to fully grasp the problem. Dogs are notably smaller than humans. Therefore by body size alone, the amount of toxin needed to poison the animal would be significantly less. SIDEBAR:The poisoning of our pets by dog food preservatives could be viewed as an early warning for you. If the preservatives can cause this amount of damage, then what are preservatives in your own food doing to you? Kind of makes you wonder just how much processed food you should be accepting into your diet. Dog food should contain healthy ingredients. But equally important, to avoid dog food dangers it should not contain harmful ingredients. When you listen to dog food commercials, hear what is being said. Made with no artificial flavors or colors is good. But, it does not mean that there are no preservatives. What dog food is safe? The safest would be what you make. Yes, you can make dog food.
