Certified Naturally Grown Offers Organic Food Advantages

Certified Naturally Grown is a grass-roots movement that takes natural farming and all natural foods to the level of certification and verification.

It is a direct result of the National Organic Program. Are they in competition with the organic producers?

Not exactly. You see, the NOP requires that farmers selling over $5000 worth of produce be certified, and not to use the term 'organic' without certification.

This created a problem for the small producer. They don't make enough money to have paying for the certification process and all the paperwork a sound investment.

Yet, they have been using traditional organic practices; in some cases, for generations.

Their customers trust and want their produce and their all natural beef. Their food didn't change. Just the rules on what to call it changed.

This saw the birth of Certified Naturally Grown. Farmers evaluating the operations of other farmers. The standards used are the USDA Organic Program requirements.

This is the starting point though. I say this because these farmer's are sticking to the original spirit of the legislation. They are unwilling to water down the requirements.

And...

They even take it up a notch. The CNG farmers consent to random tissue sampling and lab testing for residues of pesticides. This, by the way, is not an organic requirement.

Another difference is that the certification records are available for you to view exactly how they were submitted. As well as a listing of participating farms in North America (opens a new window).

This grass-roots movement has hit the British Isles too. Here it is the Wholesome Food Association http://www.wholesome-food.org.uk that offers consumers the natural choice.

So is this the right choice for you?

Questions to Ask Yourself

1. Can I get local organic food or is it shipped across country or even across oceans?

2. Is it a must for me that my food be certified organic?

3. Will I be happy with the standards delivered by certified naturally grown?

If you are a farmer in North America or the UK using natural growing practices, you need to get certified. Not promoting the value you have to offer is costing you income.

As an example...

I met a local producer of lamb, pork and beef at my local farmer's market. I asked him about his methods. Turns out there were no chemicals, pesticides or hormones.

But, he didn't promote this. I suggested he get a sign made up and posted, because he has what people want.

He did and you know what...

I now have to wait in line to be served. And I couldn't be happier about it!

So, ask questions, lots of questions. Find a local producer that uses natural farming practices and still get the organic food advantages.
