Sources And Benefits Of CLA

Benefits of CLA relate to CLA being a fatty acid. Fatty acids are used by every cell in the body. And so a deficiency in fatty acids would then be expected to effect every body system.

Most recently, conjugated linoleic acid has been touted as excellent for aiding weight loss.

How can a fatty acid assist in weight loss?

Fatty acids have an additional role of transporting nutrients. When a deficiency exists the body then is not functioning efficiently. It is more likely to act as though it is starving. That is, the body would not easily give up body fat.

A 2007 study at the University of Massachusetts, found that this nutrient prevents body fat accumulation and weight gain. This would suggest a benefit to weight maintenance.

Conjugated linoleic acid can also increase fat loss and at the same time increase the lean muscle mass. These are two separate actions. Although it may appear that fat has been turned into lean muscle, that is not possible. One cell type does not change into another.

Instead, the body is obtaining what it needs to both discard unnecessary fat and to build lean muscle mass.

cattle grazing, cla Your body cannot produce it, but you can get it by consuming whole milk, butter, lamb or beef. It is interesting to note that a study at the University of Wisconsin found that cows grazing permanent natural pastures had 500% more CLA in their milk. (Oct 1999 Journal of Dairy Science.)

What does this mean to you...

You can increase your intake by drinking whole milk from pasture fed cows. Go with organic whole milk because pasture fed is a way of life for these animals.

And if it's presence in the milk is increased by the animal being pasture fed, one could extrapolate that the tissues and meat of these animals would also contain higher levels of the fatty acid.

Of course, the benefits of CLA is also available as a supplement. I found when I added Tonalin CLA (registered trademark), I lost weight and the muscles in my legs appeared firm and toned. After the weight was dropped, I have also been able to maintain with relative ease. You should be able to pick it up in most health food stores.
