Antibiotics In Food: What You Need To Know
Antibiotics are a medicine to kill bacteria. They should not be in your food. Why not, you say? Wouldn't I be healthier with a little medicine? No. This is medicine that was not prescribed for you. It was prescribed by a vet for an animal. The medicine has gotten into the tissues of the animal or the milk and then you consumed it. With this, you are getting exposure to medicines that you and your doctor do not control. This is how a person can have a allergic reaction from penicillin the very first time he received it. To have an allergic reaction, one must have exposure first. Then following the exposure, the body creates a defense against the possible enemy. So the doctor checks the person's records and finds he has never received penicillins. Or has he? One could have unwittingly received them in the milk or tissues of animals. This uncontrolled exposure to penicillins can contribute to the resistant strains of bacteria. An ever increasing problem in North America. So what can you do?
1. Buy certified organic whenever you can.
2. Go to your local Farmer's Market and talk to the producer himself. Find out if this is in the meat.
3. Go to your local butcher shop and talk to him about where he gets the meat.
By putting the word out of what you are willing to purchase, you will have more control. As a consumer, there is no more important person to the producer. When you take a sensibly approach to organics you will naturally make changes to benefit your health.
